Saturday Boredom Busters

Sioux Falls, SD

     The Avera Race Against Breast Cancer is a fundraiser to enhance cancer care in Sioux Falls and surrounding communities.
     Participants can take part in events ranging from a 10K run to a 1.5-mile family fun walk.
     Activities underway at 8 am at the Avera McKennan Fitness Center on Southeastern Avenue.
     Registration costs $40.

     The Spring Parade of Homes showcases dozens of newly-built homes in the Sioux Falls area.
     The tours go from 1-5 pm today and Sunday, 5:30-8:30 pm Monday.
     It costs $5 to see the featured home, otherwise all the other homes are free to see.

     Catch a glimpse of downtown living at the Downtown Loft Tour.
     Register at the Downtown Sioux Falls, Inc. office at 230 S. Phillips starting at 9:30 am
     The tours take place from 10 am to 4 pm.
     The cost is $5.

     Members of the Sioux Falls Roller Dollz will demonstrate the basics of roller derby to girls ages 7-17.
     The free demonstrations will be held at the hard surface rinks at Memorial and Sherman Parks from 1-3 pm.
     Girls who want to take part need to bring their own roller blades and wear a helmet, elbow and knee pads, plus wrist guards.    

     The National Association of Letter Carriers will not only be delivering the mail, they'll also be picking up food donations as part of Stamp Out Hunger.
     Be sure to leave a bag of non-perishable food items like soup, canned veggies and fruits, pasta, rice or cereal near your mailbox today.

     Kids can spend a day of fun on the frontier during a Pioneer Day Camp.
     Kids can go fishing, dip a candle, make ice cream and play historic games starting at 8 am at the Beaver Creek Nature Area in Brandon.
     The $25 admission fee also includes food.

     Dakota Folk is a celebration of traditional arts and cultures in Sioux Falls.
     This free, family-friendly festival showcases music, dance and crafts from 11 am to 5 pm at the Washington Pavilion.

     Sioux Falls Fire Chief Jim Sideras will be the featured speaker at Mayor Mike Huether's Listening & Learning Session.
     It goes from 9 to 10:30 am at the Central Fire Station at 100 South Minnesota Avenue.

     The United States Submarine Veterans along with the World War II Submarine Veterans are hosting a memorial Saturday at the USS Scorpion Memorial on the banks of the Missouri River in Yankton.
     The memorial goes from noon to 1 pm and includes an honor guard retiring colors, speakers, plus the recognition of World War II veterans for their service.
     The memorial ends with a wreath tossed into the river.
     Everyone is then invited to the Yankton VFW for lunch afterward to hear more stories from veterans.

     The Minnehaha County Master Gardeners are hosting their annual plant sale from 9-11 am in the Domestic Arts Building at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds.
     The sale features a variety of annuals, perennials, vegetables and house plants.
     Admission is free.
