Prison Employees Testify About Escape Attempt

There was emotional testimony in a Minnehaha County courtroom Monday morning in the sentencing hearing of an inmate who admits to killing a corrections officer during an escape attempt.

Following the week-long hearing, a judge will decide if Eric Robert will be sentenced to die for the crime.

Monday morning, Robert watched as attorneys laid out what will happen over the next few days. The trial will include testimony from investigators, the prison warden and family members of correctional officer Ron Johnson. Robert's attorney says his client will also take the stand to talk about his anger and hate and to explain why he deserves the death penalty.

The first witnesses were correctional officers. They testified that Robert was wearing an officer's uniform and was pushing a cart during the attempted escape.

Robert watched the witnesses as they testified and took notes.

The court has recessed until 3:45 p.m. You can watch when the hearing resumes at that time. Just go to the KELOLAND.com Live Video page.
