Peak Time For West Nile

sioux falls, sd

For some people, the symptoms are minor. But for others, West Nile can be a very dangerous illness.
Symptoms range from minor body aches to high fevers and even death.

They're usually just irritating, but one type of mosquito can have much more dangerous effects.

It can carry the West Nile Virus, and can in turn, infect you. With peak West Nile time being right now in the second and third weeks of August, are more cases being reported? State Epidemiologist Lon Kightlinger says, the answer is no.

"We're having a low year but they are still out there and people still need to protect themselves," Kightlinger said.

So far South Dakota has had five cases reported; that's way down from the average number of sixty.
