One Inmate Held For Death Of Other Inmate

An unresponsive inmate was taken by ambulance from the Springfield prison to a hospital in nearby Tyndall, South Dakota, where he was pronounced dead Tuesday morning.
Authorities have yet to release the extent and type of injuries that led to Dennis Lashley's death, but have said a preliminary investigation shows there were no weapons involved.

Authorities are now looking at another inmate, Kendall Osteen. He had been serving a five-year sentence for his fourth DWI out of Pennington County.  His sentence was scheduled to end on November 15, the same day as the death.

An off-duty employee of the medium security prison said off camera it is typical for inmates to worry about making it in the outside world. The employee said a lot of inmates end up going back after they are released.

People who live in Springfield are staying pretty quiet about the incident.  In fact, many of them had not heard about the death.  The prison itself did not appear to be on lockdown later in the afternoon.

The division of Criminal Investigation is handling this death and will look at security camera footage and autopsy results for more answers.
