Official: Wildfire Season Not Over In Black Hills

RAPID CITY, SD

Fire officials in Rapid City say the potential for wildfires is still high for some areas of the Black Hills despite the cooler, wet weather.

South Dakota Public Broadcasting reports that the wildfire potential remains in the extreme category for some parts.

Rapid City Fire Department captain Dustin Willett says extra moisture in the Black Hills this summer has led to thicker grass, which can fuel more volatile wildfires.

He urged people to use common sense when outdoors.

The fire captain said four out of five wildfires are caused by people, and most are preventable.
