No Violations Of Juvenile Housing Law In SD

pierre, sd

South Dakota officials say no violations were reported last year of a federal law stipulating where juvenile offenders can be housed while awaiting court action.

It was the first time the state achieved no violations since regaining compliance with the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Action Act in 2003, when the Legislature passed a bill dealing with temporary custody for juveniles.

Corrections officials say that in 2002, the state had a total of 415 reported violations. The number dwindled steadily to 10 in 2008, three in 2009 and none last year.

Regaining compliance with the federal law meant South Dakota was eligible for federal juvenile justice grants. The state has received more than $6 million.
