Neb. Pipeline Bill Slated For Second-Round Debate

lincoln, ne

A Nebraska bill aimed at the Keystone XL oil pipeline is set for second-round legislative debate.

Lawmakers are scheduled to convene Friday for new debate on a measure (LB4) that would allow Nebraska officials to conduct their own environmental review of the Keystone XL. The bill by Sen. Chris Langemeier of Schuyler would authorize the Department of Environmental Quality to conduct the review in cooperation with federal authorities.

Pipeline operator TransCanada agreed this week to divert its 1,700-mile, $7 billion oil project away from the Nebraska Sandhills. Pipeline critics maintain the pipeline will eventually leak and could harm the Ogallala aquifer, a groundwater supply that lies beneath Nebraska and parts of seven other states.
