Neb. Lawmakers Introduce 2 More Pipeline Bills

lincoln, ne

Nebraska lawmakers have introduced two new bills aimed at oil pipelines.

The Legislature on Thursday ended its third day of a special session that was called to address concerns over the Keystone XL pipeline.  One bill by state Sen. Ken Haar of Malcolm would create an "exclusion zone" where pipelines larger than 8 inches in diameter could not run unless the state Public Service Commission grants permission. It's intended to protect Nebraska's environmental resources.

A second bill by state Sen. Bill Avery of Lincoln would require companies such as TransCanada, the Keystone XL developer, to post a $500 million bond. The bond would be made available to landowners and counties to restore any damages to land, infrastructure or natural resources.

Hearings on bills are expected to start next week.
