RAPID CITY, SD

The chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts will be in Pine Ridge and Rapid City this week to discuss local community art and learn about efforts to foster artists in South Dakota.

Rocco Landesman will visit the Heritage Center at Red Cloud Indian School in Pine Ridge on Wednesday afternoon. The center buys and sells work from 150 Lakota artists.

Heritage Center director Peter Strong says he is excited for Landesman to see what Native artists are producing.

Landesman also will join a Thursday discussion on arts in the Black Hills at the Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City. The discussion will focus on how art can create stronger local communities. The 10 a.m. event is open to the public.
