State Rep. Gene Abdallah of Sioux Falls says he will remember Bill Janklow as a close friend who always worked to help the people of South Dakota.
Janklow was elected as South Dakota's governor four times and served as the state's representative in Congress. He died Thursday at the age of 72.
After receiving the news of Janklow's death, Abdallah dabbed tears from his eyes as he sat at his desk on the House floor. Abdallah was superintendent of the state Highway Patrol for about six years when Janklow was governor.
Abdallah says most people saw Janklow's tough side, but his friends witnessed a softer side of a man who dedicated his life to helping people.
