Justices Say Officer Was Proper In Seizing Cats

SIOUX FALLS, SD

The South Dakota Supreme Court has ruled that a Pierre police officer was proper in seizing 15 cats from a woman who was traveling with them in her car.

In a 3-2 decision, justices affirmed a lower court ruling that the felines in Patricia Edwards' car presented a significant safety risk to the public.

The high court said the cats were wandering around loose in a jam-packed vehicle, distracting her and interfering with her ability to see where she was going. Because of the cats in the back window, Edwards failed to see a patrol car behind her in a convenience store parking lot and nearly backed into it.

Edwards was appealing the lower court ruling that transferred ownership of the cats to the local humane society for adoption.
