Janklow Brought Women Into The Workplace

Pierre, SD

Janklow's influence is being felt across the state, but especially in Pierre. His influence at the capitol is still felt today.

KELOLAND News' Ben Dunsmoor was live in Pierre Thursday with Julie Johnson, former secretary of labor and secretary of revenue.

Johnson said Janklow was ahead of his time when it came to the glass ceiling and women in the workplace.

"One of the headlines that hasn't been written is how he brought a lot of women into his administration and gave us a chance at a time when hardly any of us were doing these remarkable, amazing assignments in Pierre or anywhere.   So, I'm just blessed to have had that," Johnson said.

She said she owes a lot of her career to him.

"I had the good fortune to find him when I was a law student and he was attorney general and I got to be an intern for him in the attorney general's office.  Custer courthouse riot trial days, American Indian movement; very heady times.  I got to be the legal intern on the case, so we got a great bonding experience there.  He called me years later, and said, 'come on out.'  The rest is history.
