During a special meeting tonight, the Huron city commission accepted the retirement and resignation of police chief Doug Schmitt, who served for 32 years.
Schmitt was placed on administrative leave earlier this month after making controversial comments to a state senate committee.
That's where he told lawmakers he knew of employers in the area who had knowingly hired illegal workers.
Chief Schmitt and the commission both apologized for the public controversy this issue has created. The commission also thanked Schmitt for his years of dedication to the community.
An interim police chief will be appointed and the job opening with be formally reopen at a meeting Monday night.
