Following months of public input and countless hours of discussion, a diverse group of business leaders and private citizens is ready to unveil it's vision of Sioux Falls in the year 2035.
Shape Sioux Falls is basically a look into the future, and how to effectively manage the changes that lie ahead, beginning with a growing population.
Based on historic trends, the city's population is projected to reach 270,000 people by the year 2035. It's up to the 20 members of Shape Sioux Falls to determine the best way to accommodate that growth.
The long-range, comprehensive plan includes ten chapters. The Sioux Falls City Council recently approved chapter one; Land Use and Development. In other words, what should streets and parking lots look like in the future?
Now the focus is on expansion - both commercial and private. Where should new neighborhoods be built and how big or small should they be?
Another question you may be asking yourself: why do we need a comprehensive plan for the future? The best way to answer that says the city planning department, think of what the city looked like 30 years ago.
The downtown viaduct was a strange-looking slab on concrete connecting the fast growing east-side to the rest of the city. And the city's greenway system was only found on paper, in the 25 year plan.
The public is invited to take a closer look at the "Shape Sioux Falls Plan" during an open house on Tuesday night, August 25, 2009 from 4 - 6 p.m. at the Orpheum Theater.
