A group of Republican senators wants to give voters a chance to decide whether to raise taxes in defiance of Gov. Dennis Daugaard's call to balance the upcoming budget without a tax hike.
Senate Pro Tempore Bob Gray, a Pierre Republican, amended another bill Wednesday to deal with a special election this November.
Voters would have from July 1 to August 2 to collect signatures for a ballot measure. Gray told the Senate State Affairs Committee that he wants South Dakotans to eventually decide whether to raise taxes.
Daugaard has said he will reject any tax hikes or spending of reserves to balance the state's $127 million deficit. He's proposed 10 percent cuts to state education and healthcare spending.
