Former U.S. Senator Tom Daschle says Bill Janklow was a larger-than-life political figure who worked hard to get things done to make South Dakota a better place.
Janklow, a Republican who served four terms as governor and represented the state in Congress, died Thursday at age 72.
Daschle, a Democrat, says Janklow wound up being one of his closest friends, even though the two were in different political parties. Daschle remembers that Janklow defended him when he was criticized for helping a friend who ran an aviation service, and Janklow even ran a newspaper ad supporting Daschle in the 2004 Senate race.
Daschle says a good friend is a blessing, and people who could call Janklow a friend were really blessed.
