SIOUX FALLS, SD
Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether on Monday asked residents to minimize water usage for 48 hours to slow the flow of water through the city's overtaxed sanitary sewer system.
The city has been dumping sewage discharge into the Big Sioux River since Friday's heavy rainfall. City engineers had fixed a lift station problem early Monday, but new rainfall caused the system to back up again.
Huether asked that residents stop discharging sump pump water into their drains and reduce toilet flushing and laundry washing.
Flooding has plagued southeast South Dakota after recent rains. The National Weather Service had several flood warnings in effect Monday.
The city of Mitchell set a July record for rainfall with 10.22 inches, topping the old mark of 9.81 inches set in 1993.
