More than 40,000 Sioux Falls voters hit the polls for Tuesday's events center election. That beats the city's previous election, the mayoral runoff, which had 32,000.
This year, many tried to beat long lines by voting early as 5,500 people voted absentee.
Interim City Clerk Sue Roust says you don't often see big numbers like these for a city election.
"Sometimes a presidential election will really get people out, but this was more of a local election with a lot of grassroots efforts in it and it was just terrific to see this much engagement on both sides," Roust said.
Roust says a number of voters were turned away because they showed up at the wrong precinct. We'll have more on what happened and what voters can do to avoid problems at the polls, tonight on KELOLAND News.
