Daugaard: Corps Must Improve Predictions

pierre, sd

Gov. Dennis Daugaard says the Army Corps of Engineers must improve the accuracy of its predictions of runoff into the Missouri River after this summer's flooding in South Dakota and other states.

Daugaard says many people believe the agency should have released more water last winter and spring from the Missouri River reservoirs so the severity of the flood could have been reduced. But he says better estimates of spring rain and snow would help avoid a similar flood in the future.

Daugaard was among about 200 people who attended a meeting in Pierre held by the Corps of Engineers to take public comment on its plan to operate the Missouri River dams in the next year.
