Custer's Schultz Making His Mark

Sioux Falls, SD

Tyler Schultz's goal for his senior season was to break the state's all-time record in the shot put. He just didn't expect it to happen so soon.

"If it was going to happen I didn't think it would happen until the end of the season but I ended up getting it in the middle of the season, got a good day, got a few good throws in and ended up getting it by a couple of inches," Custer Senior Tyler Schultz said.

The throw of 69 feet, 5-3/4 inches set the new mark after just one year. Schultz bested former Beresford standout and current USD freshmen Kyle McKelvey's record by nearly 3 inches, and admitted it was nice to finally top his old rival in the record books.

"It feels great. That's a load off my back for sure," Schultz said.

Schultz didn't break his record at the Sioux Falls Relays this past weekend, but still managed to finish more than 10 feet better than his next closest competitor.

While tossing the 12 pound shot obviously takes some strengthm, Schultz is the 1st to admit it's not all muscle.

"Strength is just a plus, but if you have the technique down it just kinda shows. I'm an undersized thrower, but I worked on it so much that my technique is getting better and better," Schultz said.

And now with the state record under his belt the Colorado State recruit is on the hunt to break 70 feet, and he's confident he has it in him.

"I do, I do...It's just a matter of getting my technique down," Schultz said.
