CFB: Trojans Drop Home Finale

The Dakota State University football team hosted Dordt (Iowa) Defenders in Trojans’ season home finale late Saturday afternoon at Trojan Field. The Defenders outscored the Trojans 27-8 in the second-half and defeated DSU 40-20.

Dakota State dropped their overall record to 1-8. Dordt improved their record to 2-6.

Barry Dykstra hit a 29-yard field goal to give DC a 3-0 in the opening drive. The Defenders used 10 plays in 48 yards in three minutes and 15 seconds.

After the Trojans went three-and-out, Dordt added another 29-yard field goal from Dykstra to extend their lead to 6-0 with 5:34 left in the first quarter. DC used 11 plays for 42 yards in 4:42.

DC’s Justin Knot threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Sam Du Mez with less than 12 minutes before intermission. Dykstra added the PAT kick to give Dordt a 13-0 lead.

After DSU’s Robert Ortiz returned a 42-yard kick-off return to give a Trojans’ start on DC’s 40-yard line, the Trojans used five plays for 40 yards in 2:41 for their first score of the game. Brandon Large ran for seven yards and lateral pitch to Jeb Olsen for another 13 yards for the score. The PAT kick by Dennis Lechner was hit by the goalpost as DSU trimmed DC’s lead to 13-6.

Dakota State scored again in the late second quarter. As the Defenders punt the ball for 31 yards from their own 11-yard line, DSU’s Ortiz returned for 15 yards to DC’s 27-yard line. The Defenders were penalized for a personal foul to give DSU a start on the DC 13-yard line. The Trojans scored as Large threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Ortiz. DSU trailed at 13-12 before halftime.

Dordt scored 20 straight points from third to fourth quarters to extend their lead to 33-12.

The Trojans used six plays for 60 yards for their next score with 5:21 left in regulation. Large connected to Carl Curtis for a 13-yard touchdown pass. The 2-point conversion was successful as Large threw a pass to Curtis to cut Defenders’ lead to 33-20.

Dennis Fennig added another score or DC as he rushed for an eight-yard touchdown. Dykstra’s PAT was good to extend DC’s lead to 40-20.

Large completed 14 of 29 passes for 108 yards and added 45 rushing yards for the Trojans. He had a touchdown and an interception. Olsen rushed nine times for 52 yards and a score. Ortiz had three receptions for 35 yards. Stacey Berg added a reception for 35 yards. Curtis had five catches for 29 yards and a touchdown.

Knot was 15-for-31 with 208 yards for the Defenders. He recorded a touchdown pass and two interceptions. Fennig rushed 30 times for 168 yards with four touchdowns. David Griess had eight catches for 85 yards. Sam Du Mez added three receptions for 72 yards and a score.

Eric Liles and Alex Waba each had 11 tackles for DSU. Bryce Logan and Wade Hoffman each had eight tackles. Logan had three broken-up passes. Matt Groff and Dana Felderman each had an interception.

Seth Vande Voort had seven tackles for the Defenders. Anthony Hallum had an interception.

Dordt outgained Dakota State 446-222 in total yards. The Trojans had 111 yards each in passing and rushing. The Defenders rushed 53 times for 238 yards.

The Trojans were penalized 13 times for 132 yards. DC committed four penalties for 34 yards.

Dordt had a possession for 36 minutes and 49 seconds in the game compared to DSU’s 23 minutes and 11 seconds.

It was the final career home game for Trojans’ seniors – Felderman, Hoffman, Logan, Joe Monize, Jacob Nikolaisen and Matt Parr.

Dakota State heads on the road next Saturday. The Trojans head to Rapid City, S.D. to take on former Dakota Athletic Conference foe South Dakota Mines. Kickoff from the O’Harra Stadium is set for 2 p.m. (CT)/1 p.m. (MT).
