ACLU: Two SD Women Suing Over Voting Issue

The American Civil Liberties Union says two Pine Ridge women have filed a federal lawsuit claiming they were illegally removed from the voting rolls and asking that their voting rights be restored.

In a release, the ACLU says the names of Kim Colhoff and Eileen Janis were improperly removed from the rolls last year because they had felony convictions.

The ACLU says state law only takes away voting rights from people sentenced to prison but that Colhoff and Janis were only sentenced to probation.

Secretary of State Chris Nelson, the Shannon Country auditor and the state Board of Elections members were named as defendants.

Nelson said he could not comment because he had not seen the complaint.
