Abortion Bill Discussion Today

South Dakota lawmakers are expected to start debate today on a bill that would ban many of the 800 abortions done every year in the state.

Voters rejected a similar measure in November. Abortion foes are encouraged by public opinion polls that showed a ban with rape and incest exceptions, like the new bill, might pass muster with South Dakotans.

Unlike last year, none of the legislative leaders are on board this time, including those who helped sponsor last year's bill. They think people are weary of the issue so soon after last year's fight.

Legislative supporters of the bill say legislators shouldn't lose the momentum they gained last year.
