Bill Janklow's former Superintendent of the South Dakota Highway Patrol says the former governor told him about the cancer a week ago.
Gene Abdallah says the two have been friends for 35 years. He says Janklow always put the people of South Dakota first.
"I spent two weeks with him at the Spencer tornado. He didn't go back and just sit in his office. He was there. He had a motor home, he owns a motor home, and he stayed there. I had to be there; that was my job. He didn't, but he was there," Abdallah said.
Something you might not know about Janklow, Abdallah says he has a fantastic sense of humor.
