A Watertown man is not guilty of killing the one-year-old daughter of his former live-in girl friend earlier this year.
A Codington County Jury has found 26-year-old Jay Barse not guilty of second-degree murder. They also found him not guilty of the lesser offenses of first and second degree manslaughter.
Barse’s trial started a week ago. The prosecution said he admitted to hitting Serenity Sea Boy in the head. She later died after being treated for head trauma.
But his defense said Barse confessed to hitting the girl four days before she went to the hospital, so his confession doesn’t connect him with Sea Boy’s death.
The jury went to deliberate late Monday morning and reached a verdict around 2:40 Monday afternoon.
