Valley Springs Flooding Destroys Home

Valley Springs, SD

Valley Springs is one of many communities that experienced heavy flooding over the weekend. This caused significant damage to homes, and one of the hardest hit areas was Mark Moore’s home.

Moore has lived in his home for the past 11 years. But severe flooding on Sunday changed everything for him and his wife.

"At seven o'clock in the morning, we woke up and I could hear a noise, and I looked out the window to see if it was the wind, and the house was surrounded by water,” Moore said.

After collecting a few belongings from the basement, the two evacuated the home. Shortly after, the basement walls caved in and up to eight feet of water poured in.

"I was dumbfounded that the basement collapsed. And I'm just standing there, looking at, you know, all of our belongings, you know, turning into soup, so to speak," Moore said.

When the foundation caved in, the gas line was cut, creating a very dangerous situation. It took workers nearly three hours to find the gas line beneath the water and cap it off.

Although most of the water has receded from the roads outside of Valley Springs, Moore's home has received damage that is beyond repair.

As for future plans, Moore plans to relocate.

"I'm going for higher ground. Definitely,” Moore said.

Despite losing many of his belongings, Moore says he's thankful that no one was hurt.
