USS South Dakota Submarine To Be Christened

A ship bearing the USS South Dakota name will be soon sailing again.

The U.S. Navy is set to christen its newest Virginia-class submarine at a ceremony on Saturday in Groton, CT. A bottle of South Dakota-made sparkling wine will be smashed during the event.

On Thursday, World War II Veteran Donovan Charles presented decking from the battleship USS South Dakota to the new submarine crew. A Harley Davidson motorcycle dedicated to the submarine was also at the event for the crew to view.

A commemorative shotgun has also been produced by Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks in Mitchell and A&A Engraving in Rapid City. The USS South Dakota Commissioning Committee will be selling raffle tickets for a copy of the gun. For more information, visit the group's Facebook page.
