Minnesota State-Mankato football coach Todd Hoffner is charged with two counts of child pornography. The 46-year-old is on paid leave from the university but he also has a South Dakota connection.
The investigation began when Hoffner brought his work-issued cell phone into the university's IT Department when it wasn't working. And police say when a technician was going through it to fix it, they found three pornographic videos of children under the age of ten. Prosecutors say those kids are related to Hoffner and that they were naked.
But MSU-Mankato isn't the only university looking into Hoffner's background.
Hoffner was an offensive coordinator at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion from 2006 until early 2008. A USD media spokesperson says a review of Hoffner's file didn't find anything that would warrant an investigation. But now USD President Jim Abbott has asked for all of Hoffner's information, including his cell phone record, from the university's Human Resources Department.
Hoffner was also employed with the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire from 1999 to 2005. That school is also looking into his records. A spokesman there says there's no indication anything like that happened there but they thought it would be a good idea to take a look at it.
We'll have more on the review of Hoffner's file during his time in Vermillion tonight on KELOLAND News.
