Xcel Energy crews have restored power to an estimated 10,200 customers in Sioux Falls and other South Dakota communities hit by an ice storm that snapped trees, broke power poles and downed power lines.
As of 5PM, crews are continuing to work to restore service to an estimated 11,200 customers who remain without power. According to an newly released statement from Xcel, damage to the system is extensive and new outages continue to occur. Officials say crews will work around-the-clock to restore service as quickly and safely as possible although some customers may not have their power back until midday Thursday.
Xcel Energy crews from Minnesota and North Dakota and contract crews from Iowa have been called to South Dakota to help local Xcel Energy crews restore power. A workforce of 113 was expected to be in the field by tonight. In addition, contract crews from Green Bay, Wis., will arrive Wednesday to assist with the effort.
Xcel Energy cautions customers to stay away from downed power lines and report their location at 1-800-895-4999. All downed power lines, even if they’re not moving or sparking, are dangerous and should never be approached.
