A South Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper hurt in a chase in Sioux Falls early Wednesday morning has had surgery to relieve pressure on his brain.
Col. Craig Price says Andrew Steen remains in critical condition following the successful surgery. Doctors at Sanford Medical Center say the surgery is not uncommon with head injuries like Steen received.
"Andrew is receiving the best possible care, and he has the full support and prayers of not only his family and friends but also of everyone in the South Dakota Highway Patrol and the Department of Public Safety,'' Price said. "His family and the Patrol have been gratified by the outpouring of public support, and we continue to ask for good thoughts and prayers for our trooper in his recovery.''
The eight-year veteran of the Highway Patrol was hit by a car following an attempted traffic stop that escalated into a pursuit.
The 25-year-old female suspect was shot by authorities; so far, her name and condition haven't been released.
If you are interested in helping the Steen family, a benefit fund has been set up at Wells Fargo. Donations to the Trooper Andrew Steen Benefit Fund can be made at any Wells Fargo in the country.
There is also a Caring Bridge site set up for Steen where you can find updates on his condition.
