Travel Agency Reacts After Crippled Cruise Ship

Sioux Falls, SD

There's snow on the ground and cold temperatures in our mist. That's making many are dream of a warmer, sunnier day. However, news of a crippled cruise ship in the Gulf of Mexico has some sailing away from the idea of a cruise vacation.

"There has been some other cruise ships that have had some problems too so yeah I would be a little leery about it, I think. I know my husband would be for sure so it's probably never going to happen," Becky Teel said.

Teel and her friend Deb Teunissen have vacations on their minds. They both agree that after the incident on Triumph, they are not ready to board a ship.

"I always thought I wanted to go on a cruise but I guess the older I get the more chicken I get about it," Teel said.

"I have sisters both going on a cruise, one just got back and another one is going and I asked her if she was worried and she said not at all," Teunissen said.

Lori Buus, a travel consultant at All About Travel, says this incident won't have any effect on the cruise industry.

"If people love to cruise, they are going to cruise," Buus said.

This isn't the first time something like this has happened and you'd be surprised with the results.

"Two years ago, Carnival has a ship catch fire during a Mexican Rivera and I saw nothing but cruises pick up as far as the amount of people wanting to cruise," Buus said.

Buus says, if anything, this will drive people to head on board.

"That's been a lot of questions people have called and said, 'well, then the cheaper rates come out make sure to send me an email or give me a call," Buus said.

But, she believes that those cheaper rates may be anchors away.

"If history repeats itself we might see some fun saver sales and that type of thing but we see those anyhow," Buus said.

Regardless, if you are heading abroad or staying close to home, many are ready for a little R&R.

"I'm ready for a vacation, yes I am. I think we both are," Teunissen said.
