The Cleanup In Corsica

Corsica, SD

Last week, the Corsica community was in shock after a devastating storm changed the look of their town. On Saturday, people were working hard to get their town back to normal.

Troy Bordewik and his family are cleaning up the fallen branches and trees on his property. They were south of Corsica when the storm first hit.

"Just had wind and that out there so we weren't expecting too much in town until we got back here, started noticing a lot more damage," Troy Bordewik said.

David Scholten is also dealing with damage. His grandkids are playing soccer in his backyard, but the front of his home is full of holes after being blasted by hail during the storm.

"The first thing I did was I went to my insurance agent and they sent out, they promised to send out an estimator and that happened Wednesday so we're moving forward getting ready to look for a contractor," David Scholten said.

The homeowners dealing with different damage say the City has responded to the disaster. Twice this week, the City's rubble site opened for free for people to bring in their storm-damaged trees. Homeowners say the city's workers have made putting the storm behind them easier.

"City people have been doing pretty good. Helping clean up the debris and stuff too so they came around pretty quickly so they've done quite a bit," Bordewik said.

"Everybody's buckled down and did stuff. Equipment's out there picking up trees, branches, leaves, and doing very well. I'm happy with our little town's city office they did great," Scholten said.

And Corsica residents know that despite the damage, it could have been much worse.

"We didn't have it quite as bad as Stickney did. They got hit a little harder than we did I think, but the damage is done and now it's time to get everything fixed," Bordewik said.
