Teenager Killed In Mitchell Apartment Fire

Mitchell, SD

An apartment fire in Mitchell has claimed the life of an 18-year-old college student.

The fire started around 5:00 a.m. on Thursday. The building was an older home converted into four apartments. One of those was the home of 18-year-old Tylor Kostrzewski, who was unable to get out in time

Hours after a fire engulfed the building, fire crews continue to work at keeping down the flames.

"There was flames shooting out of the east-side windows," neighbor Abby Perez said.

"At first I thought it was fog because it was so humid out, but then I got up here to my street and it's blocked off and they said you can't go down there," neighbor Linda DelGuidice said.

As crews began to put out the flames, they also tried to account for everyone who lived in the building.

"Firefighters encountered three people that had made it out of the house and the other three unaccounted for at that time. After further digging into the fire and getting fire knocked down, they did discover a fatality inside the fire," assistant fire chief Paul Morris said.

That person is 18-year-old Tylor Kostrzewski, a new student at Mitchell Technical Institute.

"I just thought of hoping that everyone got out of the house safe and once I heard there was one that didn't make it out, it's heartbreaking. I couldn't imagine that with anybody," Perez said.

The loss of a life and the loss of homes for several families is difficult for this neighborhood to comprehend.

"Just sad for everybody that lives there, those families and friends of the people there. It looks like they've lost everything," DelGuidice said.

"It's sad, because you're just starting life now," Perez said.

Two others who lived in the apartment were taken to the hospital and treated for smoke inhalation and burns. The Red Cross is taking care of the families while the investigation into the fire continues.

There's a Go Fund Me account set up to help the family.
