A teenager is dead in Watertown following a weekend shooting. Police have arrested a 30-year-old for 2nd degree murder.
Police say a neighborhood dispute Saturday night escalated when a man pulled out a handgun and fired once, striking 17-year-old Jayden Harley.
Harley was taken to the hospital where he died.
Police say Harley was unarmed.
Officers arrested 30-year-old Alexis Javier Velazquez. He's being held at Codington County's jail.
Police say they were called about a verbal argument. They believe there was an ongoing neighbor dispute over noise that led up to this.
The victim just had his graduation party earlier in the day.
“This is a huge shock for Watertown, it’s a loss of a young life. Any life is tragic, but the young man just graduated from high school so it’s a huge loss," said Assistant Police Chief Tim Toomey.
Police have said there were several witnesses to the shooting. It happened in the street.
Harley’s mom wanted her son’s name out in the public, police say.
“(His mom) wanted people to hug their children because you never know when it’s going to be the last time,” Toomey said.
Velazquez is a resident of Watertown. It's not clear if he had any criminal history.
