A tanker truck tipped over at Interstate 29 and U.S. Highway 212, spilling approximately 50 gallons of fuel.
The incident occured approximately noon Wednesday in the northbound ramp at the exit 177. A small fire was reported, but was out by the time Watertown Fire Rescue arrived on the scene. Authorities closed westbound traffic on U.S. Highway 212 for several hours, and traffic on the northbound ramp was also blocked. At approximately 3 p.m., the tanker was turned upright and removed from the scene.
An estimated 40 to 50 gallons of fuel leaked onto the ground before crews transferred the remaining fuel onto other equipment. The tipped tanker was carrying 8,000 gallons of diesel fuel and gasoline.
The incident is under investigation by the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
