Support For Meyer Family Seen Across The Country

Aberdeen, SD

People have been showing support for the Meyers in different ways and one of those has been by giving gifts in the coach's honor.

If you use those donations sent to causes important to Don and Carmen Meyer as a gauge, it's clear support for the Meyer family is widespread.

"Across the United States," NSU Foundation president Todd Jordre said. "Many coaches, kids that went to camp, civic groups that he'd spoken to, it's just a long list of many well-wishers, many that want to celebrate his life."

Jordre says people have contributed to an endowment fund the Meyers established that provides scholarship money.

"There's also phone calls and letters and all sorts of support coming in," Jordre said.

People are already showing support for the Meyers by supporting, in their honor, a cancer center in Aberdeen.

"We've had an outpouring thus far from across the country," said Michael O'Keefe with the Avera St. Luke’s Foundation.

Meyer and his wife Carmen helped kick off a fundraising drive for the cancer center in Aberdeen last month. O'Keefe says people across the country who would likely never use the cancer center have still supported it to honor Meyer.

"Coach Don Meyer as a servant leader was amazing in his talks across the country and really lived the life that he spoke about. And I think his impact is really being seen through this outpouring of support," O'Keefe said.

People have also shown support through sharing stories on a tribute page set up for Meyer.
