Sunday Boredom Busters

Feeding South Dakota is showing two free films as part of Hunger Action Month.  Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs plays at 1:30 pm followed by The Hunger Games at 4 pm.  Both movies are playing at the Orpheum Theater in downtown Sioux Falls.  Scheels will give a free token to its Ferris Wheel that opens next year to anyone who donates a canned food item at the movies.

The 6th annual Susan G. Komen South Dakota Race for the Cure raises money and awareness to help in the fight against breast cancer.  Registration is at 7 am at Falls Park.  A survivor breakfast goes from 7-8 am.  A survivor ceremony and parade is at 8:50 am.  The 5K begins at 9 am.  The 1-mile starts at 9:30 am.  An awards ceremony, expo and live music follow the race.

Jeren's Journey is a wine tasting benefit at Calico Skies Winery at Inwood, IA.  Jeren Scheff has undergone several surgeries to treat a disorder that affects his breathing and causes other health problems.  The benefit goes from 2-5 pm and costs $25.

The Sophie Gehrke Benefit is a free will Pancake Breakfast served from 9 am to 2 pm at the Sioux Falls VFW.  The benefit also includes an auction, a raffle, face painting and a bake sale.

Celebrate National Alpaca Farm Days by visiting Alpacas @ Triple Tree Farm near Sheldon, Iowa.  Meet the alpacas and learn about their environmentally-friendly fleece during a free gathering from noon to 5 pm.

Help First United Methodist in Sioux Falls celebrate the 100th anniversary of the church's main building.  The day includes three morning services followed by a program at noon, plus a meal at 12:30 pm.  Visitors can also tour the church.  First United Methodist is located at 401 S. Spring.

The self-proclaimed Steamboat Hunter will share his fascination with sunken wrecks during a free talk at the Old Courthouse Museum in downtown Sioux Falls.  Peter King's presentation called Steamboat Wrecks on the Missouri River is at 2 pm.

Films playing at the Wells Fargo CineDome in the Washington Pavilion include Titans of the Ice Age, Waking the T-Rex 3D: The Story of Sue, and Planes.

Once Upon a Time in Harmony is a musical performance by the Sweet Adelines Sound Cascade Chorus with special guests the Sioux Empirian Chorus.  The performance is at 3 pm at the Historic Palace Theatre in Luverne, MN.  Tickets are $15. 

Brandon Lutheran Church is hosting a Heritage Festival that features a homemade lefse bake sale from 9:30 am to noon and a turkey & Swedish meatball dinner from 11 am to 1 pm.  The cost is $9 for adults, $5 for children, free for kids 5 and under.  Brandon Lutheran is located at 600 East Holly Boulevard in Brandon.

Take a free tour of the restored R.F. Pettigrew home in Sioux Falls.  Guided tours are every half-hour, from noon to 5 pm.  The Pettigrew Home & Museum are located at 8th & Duluth.

Make your way through 11-acres of paths carved out at the Heartland Corn Maze.  Hours are noon to 5 pm.  Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for kids, free for ages 4 and under.  The corn maze is located on Highway 11, south of Harrisburg.  It's open weekends through October 20th.

It's the final Sangria Sunday of the year at Strawbale Winery in Renner.  Enjoy live music and wines from 1-4 pm.  Admission is $5 a carload.
