Summer Road Construction Affects Residential Neighborhood

Sioux Falls, SD

Road construction on Russell Street has prompted the city of Sioux Falls to place a temporary four way stop on the previously unmarked corner of Elmwood and Brookings.

Although this neighborhood may seem like a quiet and peaceful place to live, many residents are anxious about cars that speed through the intersection of Elmwood and Brookings without a second glance.

"They just fly through both sections so we're always waiting for an accident to happen," Neighbor Amber Stellingwerf said.
Road construction only adds to the danger, sending more traffic to their neighborhood. As the mother of four, Stellingwerf worries about her kids' safety, but this mom is comforted by the presence of a temporary four way stop sign.

"I'm always afraid that if they do get out in the street they're going to get hit quicker. This way they at least have to come to a stop at the corner and it's easier for me to get out there quicker to get them," Stellingwerf said.

Residents in the area are concerned not only for the safety of the children living in the neighborhood, but for the safety of everyone else as well.

"We always worry about if someone's going to come through our living room. You know, you never know," Neighbor Diane Denning said.

Denning has noticed the four way stop is making drivers go slower, and she hopes the signs are eventually made permanent.
