Student Faces Firearm Charges After Accidental Shooting

britton, sd

A Britton-Hecla student faces firearm charges after an accidental shooting at a school parking lot on Wednesday.

The Marshall County sheriff says the shooting happened around 4:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. Eighteen-year-old Dusty Groom was showing some others a .22 caliber handgun he thought was unloaded.

But the gun fired and shot a teenager he was showing the gun to in the head. The sheriff says he isn't releasing the victim's name at this time because he's less than 18-years-old.

But he says the teenager is recovering in a Fargo hospital. The sheriff is waiting to hear test results from a scan.

Groom faces misdemeanor charges for reckless discharge of a gun, having a firearm on school grounds and false reporting to authorities.

He's expected in court May 20. The sheriff's office is still investigating.
