Sioux Falls, SD
Sioux Falls Police have a man in custody after a driver attempted to elude authorities during a traffic stop.
At approximately 9:30 p.m., an officer saw a 2004 Ford Taurus traveling 39 mph eastbound near East 11th Street and South 2nd Street. The vehicle traveled north on North Indiana Avenue, and as it reached East 8th Street, the officer activated his lights to make a traffic stop.
The driver of the Taurus did not stop and traveled northbound through an alley between Indiana and Fairfax Avenue, where it struck a parked Ford E-150 van. The Taurus then traveled southeast across a grass lot and reentered traffic near 8th and Fairfax. The officer discontinued the pursuit.
While traveling southbound, the Taurus ran a stop sign at 8th and Fairfax and a red traffic signal at 10th and Fairfax. While crossing East 10th Street, the Taurus struck a Volkswagen Passat and a Buick Le Sabre in the intersection, causing the Taurus to roll over multiple times.
The driver, 30-year-old James Castaneda, crawled out of the passenger window and fled on foot. Officers apprehended Castaneda in the State Office Building parking lot. The owner of the Ford Taurus reported the vehicle was stolen.
Castaneda was charged with auto theft, possession of stolen property, three counts of hit and run, aggravated eluding, fleeing police, reckless driving, driving while suspended, and speeding.
