Spearfish Authorities Identify Children Killed In House Fire

Spearfish, SD

The names of five children killed in a house fire in Spearfish over the weekend have been released.

The Spearfish Police Department says all five of the victims were found in an upstairs bedroom.  

The children killed are identified as: 

Phibie Joyce Moyer, 6, from Stugis, SD
Clinton James Johnson, 7, from Spearfish, SD 
Rhylin Zane Gee, 8, from Spearfish, SD 
Justice Lillian Gene Roden, 9, from Spearfish, SD  
Tanlynn Crystal Rain Roden, 11, from Spearfish, SD 

Forensic medical examinations will be done to verify the identities.  

Several adult victims and one teenager were also at home during the fire.  Some of them have already been treated and released.

Fire crews are still investigating what sparked the fire.  The Spearfish Fire Department is the lead agency for the investigation with the South Dakota State Fire Marshal's Office also playing a role.  

A candlelight vigil is planned for Tuesday, April 4 at 7:00 p.m. at the location of the fire near the intersection of Ames and Oliver Streets.  Parking is available in the Lyle
Hare Stadium lot on St. Joe Street and at the Donald Young Center main parking lot.

The United Methodist Church in Spearfish has offered their services as a drop off point for donations. Pastor McKirdy and others from the church will coordinate donation efforts.
