Five people died and four others were sent to the hospital in a traffic crash near Red Shirt, SD, an official with the Rapid City Fire Department told KELOLAND News.

Four of the people who died were juveniles, according to Rapid City Fire.

The crash happened on Saturday night in the upper northwest corner of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

Rapid City Fire sent multiple ambulances to the scene.

South Dakota Highway Patrol assisted, according to a spokesperson.

The FBI and tribal officials are leading the investigation. KELOLAND News has reached out to tribal law enforcement and will update this story as more details become available.

This is the second time this year that a major crash has happened in the area. In May 2017, five people, including a pregnant woman, were killed in a crash in southwestern South Dakota.

This is a developing story.
