Sioux Falls Increases Watering Restrictions

sioux falls, sd

Mother Nature hasn't been kind to KELOLAND lawns lately.  And now the City of Sioux Falls is announcing a new round of watering restrictions.

Until Wednesday, Sioux Falls residents could water every other day.  But new restrictions now only allow lawn watering once per week.

The city says the change is needed to help conserve water for more essential functions.  To make the decision, the city looked at the flow of the Big Sioux River, which is now less than 50 cubic feet per second, as well as the weather outlook, which isn't promising much rain.  While the city always asks residents to be mindful of water usage, restrictions such as these are fairly rare.

"This is not something that we've done since 2003.  We went to that level of once per week watering schedule in 2003," Trent Lubbers with Sioux Falls Public Works.

The restrictions go into place immediately and could reach an entirely new level if we don't see some more rain soon.

The day you are allowed to water is based off the last number of your home address.

0 Monday
1 Tuesday
2 & 3 Wednesday
4 Thursday
5 Friday
6 & 7 Saturday
8 & 9 Sunday

The Level 2 watering stage does allow hand watering of vegetation such as trees, plants and gardens as well as washing vehicles at home and commercial vehicle washing.  Residents are also restricted from washing outdoor surfaces such as sidewalks, driveways and parking lots.

You can find a complete guide of the Sioux Falls watering stages and other resources on the city's Water Conservation page.
