Sheriff: Seven Businesses Fail Alcohol Check In Minnehaha County

Minnehaha County

The sheriff's department in Minnehaha County says they will be working to help business pass their alcohol compliance checks.

Of the businesses checked earlier this week, 42 passed while seven businesses in the county sold to an underage customer:

Brandon
Jokerz Casino
Expressway Convenience Store

Dell Rapids
County Fair Foods

Hartford
Sunshine Foods
Char'd
Heart T Stop

Rowena
State Line Casino

In each check, an underage person tried to purchase alcohol with their own valid driver's license. According to Capt. Jason Gearman, most of the clerks looked at the ID and sold alcohol to a minor.

"In just about every case, the clerk looked at the ID and still sold the alcohol," Gearman said. "As a sheriff's office, we're going to exploring ways to be more proactive in helping these businesses pass these compliance checks."

Gearman said that city governments make the final decision on whether repeat offenders will lose their liquor license. Each business is given a civil penalty and the employee involved is cited for selling alcohol to a minor.
