More than 200 state laws ranging from bans to repeals and tweaks of existing policy take effect in South Dakota on today.
One of the new laws is the shared parenting law. Now, courts will have the option of granting more equal custody to parents who fit certain guidelines. Grant Houwman has been fighting for this law for years.
While he says the legislation isn't perfect, he's happy to see divorced parents have the opportunity to equally care for their child.
"Now if one parent doesn't want shared parenting, a judge has to rule why. He has ruled with findings of facts stating why he's ruling against somebody. He just can't say one parent doesn't want it, we're not doing shared parenting," Grant Houwman said.
