SF Video Explains Rules of the Road

Sioux Falls, SD

Wednesday's car versus bike crash brings the total tally in Sioux Falls to 15 crashes. Within weeks of each other, two area bicyclists were killed while they were out riding. One near Steen, Minnesota, the other in Sioux Falls.

"It's just an ugly thing. I mean, you really can't point the finger at anybody," Chad Pickard, Spoke-N-Sport owner/bicyclist, said.

Pickard said he notices Sioux Falls drivers violate biking rules all the time. Namely, one that requires three feet of space between cars and bicycles.

"It's probably a little bit of a misunderstanding for vehicle drivers. They think if there's room, they can get by. But for a cyclist, having that three feet is a huge buffer zone they need to feel safe," Pickard said.

As the conversation about bike safety evolves, the City of Sioux Falls is boosting efforts to get the word out about the rules of the road. The City put a bike safety plan in place seven years ago, and has recently updated it.

City leaders have also posted a video online, which spends about five minutes going over what to do or not to do. It is intended for anyone behind the wheel or behind a pair of handle bars. Transportation Planner Sam Trebilcock said the video was well into the works long before the recent fatalities.

"It's very coincidental, actually. Well, we've been doing for a number of years is trying to get the word out about bicycle safety and the laws," Trebilcock said.

Even though you are not required to watch this before you head out on the Sioux Falls streets, Pickard said he is glad to see the City make this available.

"Maybe some things that most cyclists don't think about.  I would definitely check it out and watch it, and if you're a parent, share it with your child," Pickard said.
