SF Motorcycle Crash Victim 'Was Like Family'

Sioux Falls, SD

Just months after she started a new job, family and friends are now making funeral arrangements for a 35-year-old mother who died in a motorcycle crash Wednesday night.

Shauna Rose died when the motorcycle she was riding on was hit on Interstate 229 in Sioux Falls. Rose's boyfriend, 38-year-old Michael Billet, has serious injuries but is expected to recover.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash but they say Billet and Rose had pulled onto the shoulder of Interstate 229 just after 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. When they were merging back into traffic they were hit from behind by a 20-year-old driver.

"It was like she'd been here for years and it was amazing," Phillips Avenue Diner General Manager Lindsey VanderWeide said Friday afternoon as she remembered Rose.

Rose started working as a morning server at the Phillips Avenue Diner about a month and a half ago. VanderWeide hired her and said she was the perfect fit.

"She was very outgoing and always happy and she pretty much cared about everyone and acted like she was friends and family with everyone," VanderWeide said.

Rose leaves behind three children. Children VanderWeide says Rose was proud of.

"She came in here a couple times with her kids and we got to meet them and they were so adorable and sweet as well. I know she cared about them very much," VenderWeide said.

And Rose's co-workers cared about the 35-year-old mother and friend who was lost too soon.

"It was extremely upsetting when we heard the news and it was really hard to inform the staff because it was like she was family," VanderWeide said.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol says Rose and Billet were not wearing helmets and the 20-year-old driver of the vehicle that hit the couple was not wearing his seat belt. Officials are still investigating to see if any tickets or charges will be filed.

Rose's funeral is Tuesday.
