SF Man Dies After Crash With Underage Driver

Sioux Falls, SD

A Sioux Falls man has died after his motorcycle was hit by a car driven by a 13-year old boy. The crash took place Sunday night before 6. Initially, police thought 37-year old Jason Rollings suffered a leg injury, but it turned out to be much worse.

An underage driver heading west turned south in front of a motorcycle. 37-year old rider Jason Rollings was not wearing a helmet, but appeared to have escaped the incident without serious harm.

"At the time they did not believe those were life-threatening. We found out yesterday morning that the driver of the motorcycle died on Tuesday evening," Public Information Officer Sam Clemens said.

According to a Facebook post by his brother James, Jason "developed a stroke" after what was suppose to be a routine recovery.

At the age of 13, the boy was too young to be behind the wheel. You have to be at least 14 years of age to even apply for an instructional permit.

The underage driver is charged with reckless driving, no driver's license and failure to yield.

"Some other reports that officers did and it doesn't sound like he had permission to take that vehicle. Somehow he had access to keys or knew where the keys were and was able to take the vehicle. That was a decision he made on his own," Clemens said.

Friends and family have been sharing their memories and condolences on Jason Rollings' Facebook page.

His brother James had this to say, "Six hours ago, I lost my best friend, my brother, and my better half."

Visitation for Jason Rollings is scheduled for Friday with a Funeral set for Saturday at Miller Funeral Home West.
