SD Governor Issues Pardons, Sentence Commutations

Pierre, sd

South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard has issued pardons that wipe away the criminal records of 16 people.

Pardons result in the sealing of arrest, trial and conviction records, but those documents are kept by state investigators so they can be taken into account if pardoned people commit subsequent offenses.

The people pardoned had committed crimes that included drunken driving, selling or possessing drugs, petty theft, grand theft, burglary, forgery and assault. Many of the pardons were for convictions that occurred more than a decade ago.

Daugaard also issued commutations that reduced prison sentences by up to 90 days for nearly 275 inmates. Such sentence reductions are typically ordered for inmates who perform community service in helping deal with flooding, forest fires, tornadoes or other disasters.
