Sioux Falls, SD
Officials with Sioux Falls Fire Rescue say they are investigating a fire that put a Sioux Falls family out of their home Saturday.
Angellynn King was in the house with six kids under the age of five this morning when she smelled burning plastic and heard the crackling of fire at the back of the house.
"I ran downstairs and checked and I could see the light from the fire coming in from the bottom of the door and through the window," King said.
King and everyone in the house evacuated with no injury. Sioux Falls Fire Rescue got to the fire a little before 8:30 a.m. and had the flames under control within 25 minutes. An hour later the blaze was completely extinguished. The cause of the fire is still a mystery.
"We don't know how it started. We was all in bed and the time that we got up is when I told everybody to get out of the house,” King said.
The back porch of the home faced the worst damage, and the interior suffered significant harm from the smoke. Once fire rescue workers had eliminated the fire, they noticed a gas can in the back yard. In her conversation with the fire crews, Jonnie Joseph told them this gas can had been in the front yard before she left for work that morning.
"Think it's very suspicious, they think somebody was there this morning who moved it to the back,” Joseph said.
Although residents of the home are concerned about arson, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Although no one was injured in this fire, fire crews say that this case is a good reminder to make sure you update the batteries in your smoke alarms, and to have an escape plan in place.
